Flying Higher

Well another week ahead of us with all the demands put upon us.  It can be a little overwhelming just to get up in the morning some days.  With all the responsibilities placed upon us its hard to take on one more thing.  And people are often afraid that “taking on Jesus Christ” is yet just another burden with an endless list of do’s and don’ts or shall’s and shalt nots.

We can be vulnerable to the lie that God’s ways will stop us or slow us down.  We fear that following Jesus means that more and more demands will be placed on our lives and that we will not be free to push our creativity and growth to new heights.  We want to succeed and cannot afford being tied down with a lot of religious rules and restrictions.

Some people will never reach their full potential because they REFUSE to be tied to Jesus.  The same can be said for those who see His commands as “taking away all my fun.”  The fact of the matter is that true and lasting joy comes through knowing Jesus AND following Him.  Consider this….

It’s a beautiful day at the beach.  Sunny and warm with a nice breeze.  You sit on your beach towel and watch kites flying in the wind.  Box kites, funny shaped kites, colorful kites.  All kinds of kites.  And you watch as the kites soar higher and higher, free in the breeze.  Ahhhhh.   Would you say the string holding the kite is a burden to it?  That the string is holding it back?  Keeping the kite from reaching its full potential?

I say NO.  The string is there to control and guide the kite.  The kite will not and cannot fly unless it is in partnership WITH the string.  Cut the string and the kite may seem to fly freely for a moment but soon it will come crashing to the ground.  The string gives the kite some direction and purpose by holding it fast against the wind.  The string helps the kite use the wind to its advantage and without it the kite would be at the mercy of every gust of wind.  Without the string it would without a doubt end up crashed or caught in a tree or power line.  But with the control of the string, the kite can be guided to miss the trees and power lines and when it is time, it can be reeled in, returned safely to home.

In the same way, our daily surrender to the Lord Jesus is NOT burdensome, nor does it take away enjoyment in life.  Like the kite string, He makes certain the wind is in our favor and we are always in position to get the most out of life.  Let Jesus be your “kite string” this week and see if you don’t fly higher.

Jesus said in Matthew 11:30 “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light”
